What happened to the country of Haiti is tragic. The people of that country deserve our help, and certainly deserve respect. But what bothers me, is that Haiti was a disaster zone BEFORE the intial hurricane. People were in trouble there way before it started being televised, and very very few people cared. For instance, the poverty in Haiti hardly crossed my mind before Brian Williams brought it to my attention. We have been neglecting the third world countries in the Carribean, and all over the world for years, and while it is wonderful that people give a shit now, what is going to happen when the publicity dies down? What is going to happen when people stop volunteering? It will be the same mess it was before. It is a horrible cycle. I hope all the people in Haiti get the help they need, and I hope that the current efforts will positively impact the country in the long run. Humanity is kinda sad.
